About the first things I did when I was starting out with Illustrator and Photoshop. I spent alot of time just tracing the details, then finalizing everything in AI. I used to leave it for weeks then come back to it and fix little detail here and there, till finally I came back to it and found there is nothing need be changed any longer, either that or I just ran out of ideas and conscience.

You can create horizontal and vertical guides across the State rows to help you justify the font style you're making.
The State rows are intended to save the progress you make in order to keep the original paths, usually the first thing off you create, in the 1ststate, if you wish to outline them in the 2nd and so on, so you can always come back and edit the original if you needed to. You can even create more states if you demanded, if, for example, you wish to create a bold, or italic versions, you just create them in different states.
You also have the misc.store, which I added later on because I needed to save rectangles and shapes I used for measuring, or sometimes reoccuring shapes in the font, for my easy reference.
